Psychodrama is the original form of ‘group psychotherapy’, and Moreno is credited with coining the term in 1932 (Moreno, 1957, cited in Giacomucci, 2020)
Typically, a psychodrama therapy group meets weekly for up to 3 hours over a period of time, specific to the needs of the group. In a psychodrama group each member of the group works on their own personal process in every session however this may take many forms. From holding the role of: Protagonist – the group member who explores their personal issues; Auxiliary – group members who hold other roles for the protagonist in their drama; to Observer – group members who witness the drama as it unfolds. Importantly Psychodrama is not individual therapy with an audience, it is a group process. As such the issues and themes enacted by the Protagonist, and the roles held by individuals, will hold significance for the group as a whole.
Each Psychodrama session has the familiar structure of Warm-up, Enactment and Sharing. The Director, the therapist, supports the group to Warm-up to their own, and the collective issues of the group. From this a Protagonist, the client, is chosen to Enact their issues, facilitated by the Director and supported by the group. The Sharing process gives all group members a chance to reconnect and to share how the work has resonated with them personally.
All aspects of life, past, present, future, and imagined can be explored in a psychodrama group. Psychodrama has the power to contain the most challenging and difficult themes and experiences, whilst offering a lightness of touch, and humour. Working in action in an embodied way can be intense but is often fun and joyful.
